'South Park' (Comedy
Central) When "South Park" debuted 10 years ago by
having a 70-foot alien satellite dish come out of Cartman's butt, it
instantly became the most outrageously hilarious cartoon on TV. A
decade later, it's still just as outrageously funny, but now it's
also a social satire second only to "The Daily Show." Kick ass!
On DVD: Seasons 1 through 6 are available now; Season 7, recently
released, contains mini-commentaries on all 15
episodes. | |

'Harvey Birdman, Attorney at
Law' (Cartoon Network) Like Space Ghost before him,
Birdman needed a new career when his crime-fighting days were
over. So he went to law school. Whether representing Scooby-Doo
and Shaggy when they were busted for possession, or Grape Ape
when he was accused of using steroids to win the Laff-a-Lympics,
Birdman is the best postmodern cartoon since Space Ghost got his
own talk show.
On DVD: "Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law: Volume 1" is out now;
Volume 2 comes out this fall, around the time Season 3
begins. | |

'The 4400'
(USA) It started off simple enough: 4,400 missing
persons all returned at the same time, in the same place, with all
being the same age they were when they disappeared. How they and the
rest of the world react -- especially when they learn that some came
back with powers -- is why "The 4400" is one of the more
thought-provoking shows, sci-fi or otherwise, on cable.
On DVD: "The 4400: The Complete First Season" is out now; "The
Complete Second Season" (available May 23) has behind-the-scenes
featurettes and commentaries on select episodes.

'Ghost in the Shell: Stand
Alone Complex' (Cartoon Network) Although there's a
lot of good anime on Adult Swim these days, we're partial to this
action-packed cyberpunk 'toon. Like the two movies that inspired it,
this has a team of cyborgs, hackers and ex-cops battling
cyber-terrorists in the not-so-distant future. Not only does it look
as good as the second film, 2004's "Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence," but it
also has the explosive action and intelligent stories that made the
original 1995 movie such a cult classic.
On DVD: All seven volumes of Season 1 are available individually
or in a boxed set; the first five volumes of Season 2, subtitled
"2nd GIG," are also available, with limited-edition versions
including extras such as a figurine of Batou (Volume 4).

'FOX News Watch' (FOX News) Whereas Fox News
is, depending on your perspective, fair and balanced or totally
right wing, "Fox News Watch" is neither. And both. An insightful and
spirited panel discussion show that examines, and often criticizes,
the news and the way it's presented, "Watch" largely avoids being
biased by featuring a panel that includes a neocon, a neolib, a
traditional conservative and a moderate liberal, none of whom are
wallflowers.
On DVD: It's not, though the critical documentary "Outfoxed: Rupert Murdoch's War on
Journalism" that, fittingly, largely ignores "Fox News Watch,"
is out now. | |
