Tonight's the night.
After nearly three months, 32 shows and a dozen Rockers not right
for INXS, it's down to the three
finalists. One of them is going to have his life changed when he
becomes the new lead singer for INXS. When the curtain comes down
tonight, INXS will be a "complete" band ready to finish their album
(in stores Nov. 29) and to hit the road on a worldwide tour in
January 2006. The three remaining Rockers have also been in the
studio laying down vocals for the first single from the upcoming
album -- the winner will premiere that song at the end of tonight's
show. And that singer is ...
You didn't think it was going to be that easy, did you? There are
a few things to be done before that happens.
Dave, of course, has some questions
for the remaining three Rockers. He asks J.D. if he thought about driving his
new Honda Civic into the Mansion's pool. The one-time homeless
Rocker jokes he thought about it for a moment but wants to make sure
he has someplace to live if this Rock Star thing doesn't work out.
When asked how he felt leaving the Mansion for the last time, Marty says it gave him a sense of
closure -- everyone left as better performers than they were when
they arrived.
It's now time for MiG, Marty and J.D. to show just how
good they've become. Tonight's performances are in two parts. First,
the three Rockers will perform the song they chose earlier this week
-- they could pick from any song performed during the season. INXS
will then say goodbye to one of them based on his performance. Next,
the two remaining Rockers will each sing an INXS song with INXS
backing them up, but this time one of them will be told that he is
the right singer for INXS.
MiG takes the stage first. He chose Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody." He let Suzie perform it the first time
around, because he wanted to show INXS that he's moved on from his
theatrical past. Now, he just wants to sing it. It's a song he's had
a great deal of experience singing, and although his vocal is
spot-on, it feels a little too practiced.
J.D. is up next. He's the only Rocker who took a chance, singing
a song he's never sung before. The Rolling Stones' "You Can't Always Get What You Want"
defines his whole experience on "Rock Star:INXS." It's an intense
yet controlled performance -- and he brings the crowd to its feet.
Marty closes out the first round of performances with a reprise
of Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here." His first
performance on "Rock Star:INXS," he says, was so wild, he looked
like he plugged his finger into a socket. INXS has taught him to
rein in his intensity and that less is more. This performance of
"Wish You Were Here" shows off his newfound restraint.
When INXS return from their deliberations, Tim announces that the
Rocker who is not right for their band is . . . MiG! Dave is as
surprised as anyone and tells MiG that it's been "a joy" to watch
him perform. He's a "born entertainer" who "lights up every room" he
enters. MiG thanks the band in return, telling them that his time on
"Rock Star:INXS" has been the most wonderful experience of his
professional life.
With only two Rockers left, the rules have changed. Tim tells
Marty and J.D. that before, INXS loved watching them perform with
the House Band. But the real test is how
they perform with INXS. So Tim and the rest of INXS take the stage
to back up J.D. and Marty.
Marty gets to sing with INXS first. They want to hear how he does
on "Don't Change." Marty
does well, striking dramatic poses as he brings an intense yearning
to a vocally challenging song. J.D. follows, performing "What You Need." He's electrifying,
interacting with both the band and audience, simultaneously
vulnerable and demanding. It's hard to believe that he's the same
performer who ended up in the bottom three on the first week of the
show.
Before INXS makes the announcement everyone's been waiting for,
Tim has a few things he wants to say. One way or another, there will
be a brand-new INXS. "Tonight we become a complete band again." Tim
tells the final two they have been a pleasure to work with, but only
one can front INXS. J.D., he says, is a great singer -- one you
can't take your eyes off. Marty, Tim says, has also adapted and
improved -- he's riveting on stage. But it's J.D. who is the right
singer for INXS.
J.D. falls to his knees when he hears his name; when he looks up,
his cheeks are stained with tears. Marty looks stunned. J.D. got the
gig -- he's the "Rock Star" -- but Marty isn't walking away empty
handed. Tim asks if he'd consider opening up for INXS on their world
tour, and Dave offers to play guitar when Marty records an album.
To end this season, the new INXS takes the stage for the first
time and performs their new single, "Easy, Easy." J.D. fits right in
with his new bandmates, giving the new song a slinky, sexy vocal.
It's a fitting send-off to a great first season of "Rock Star."
Thanks for reading, and we hope to see you all next season. But
before then, be sure to catch INXS, with their new singer J.D.
Fortune, on their tour starting January 2006.
